Diablo 4 has a new season in progress, and the Season of Witchcraft is proving to be among the best seasons the game has seen yet. Necromancers are a strong option in Season 7 for both leveling and endgame content. You can easily take out groups of enemies and single target bosses, so it's a great class to pick when you make a seasonal character this time, especially when you can empower your build even further with new features like the Witchcraft Powers.

 

Like the Barbarian in Season 7, the Necromancer has multiple strong builds for leveling and endgame content. You have a lot of built-in support with your summons, and they can act like tanks to help mitigate damage from enemies. They help deal damage to dwindle the numbers of a horde of enemies, or they'll join you in focusing on a boss if that's your only enemy. Additionally, you get some abilities that give you more durability, creating a well-rounded build.

Balancing AoE With Blood Surge

 

You can pick quite a few Necromancer builds that are viable for endgame content, but the Blood Surge build is one of the best. You're going to start by taking Reap as your basic ability. Not only does it give you some close-range area damage, but you gain damage reduction when you hit an enemy with it, and you restore Essence with it. It's not the biggest damage dealer in this build, but you get a fair amount of utility from it.

 

Next, you move to the highlight of this build with your core ability: Blood Surge. Blood Surge will be where you spend most of your Essence, but it does a double attack. First, it deals damage by drawing blood from enemies. Then, you deal damage by using that blood to cast a blood nova. The amount of damage the nova deals is increased for each enemy you drain blood from, so this ability becomes more powerful when enemies surround you. Luckily, this is an ideal way for abilities to scale in Diablo 4 since you generally face groups.

 

Since you'll be surrounded by enemies most of the time as a Necromancer, and because you deal more damage that way with Blood Surge, you'll want a defensive skill that can save you if you end up in a bad situation. You'll take Blood Mist for a bit of defense for this build. Blood Mist gives you Immune status for a few seconds; during that time, you periodically deal damage and heal for a percent of your maximum life. This makes it ideal for a build that puts you in the center of enemies.

 

The second half of your build is heavy on utility and gives you even more AoE options. You want to take Corpse Tendrils, which pull in enemies to the corpse you use to cast the ability, stun them, and deal damage. This ability synergizes well with the overall build, which is already heavy on AoE, because it helps shift the enemies into one location, letting you take advantage of your kit to wipe them out. You can also use it for a bit of defense by pulling enemies to a position that gives you a chance to move away.

 

While you already have Blood Surge as a core ability, you're also going to pick up Blight, which is another core ability. Like Blood Surge, Blight deals an immediate burst of damage and then another round of damage after it. However, the second round of damage for Blight comes in the form of a defiled area on the ground that deals damage over time. The amount of Essence it costs can be regained quickly enough that it's worth using Blight in combination with Corpse Tendrils to capitalize on the enemies being stunned by it.

 

Finally, you'll take Soulrift as your ultimate ability. This is an amazing ability to finish up the Blood Surge build, as you deal damage to surrounding enemies for a short time. However, you also gain Essence and a temporary barrier from absorbing souls with Soulrift. All together, you have a build that gives you enough survivability to be in the middle of hordes of enemies, and it gives you enough AoE damage options to melt those enemies and keep moving. It's not surprising that this build is considered one of the strongest endgame options.

Completing Your Build

 

When it comes to gear, there are only two cheap Diablo 4 items that you want to get for the Blood Surge build in Diablo 4. These are Indira's Memory and Cruor's Embrace, as both of them have bonuses that help Blood Surge and Blood abilities in general. Otherwise, you can use gear to help fill your specific needs while looking for bonuses to Blood Surge. If you feel like you need more durability, then look for armor, resistance, and maximum life options for gear. But if you want more damage, then you want to look for stats like damage bonuses and resource management.

 

For aspects, which ones you want will vary depending on how you want to supplement your build, much like gear. Aspects like the Aspect of Hardened Bones give you extra durability by giving you damage reduction, and aspects like the Blood-bathed Aspect give you a second nova when you use Blood Surge, but with reduced damage and a delay before it goes off. As a result, you should get the Blood-bathed Aspect at least, and then options like the Aspect of Hardened Bones and the Vehement Brawler's Aspect.

 

Alongside gear and aspects, you can use gems of Diablo 4 items to boost your build. For armor, you should use Sapphires for Willpower, then put Rubies in your weapons for extra health, and finally, use Skulls in your jewelry for an armor boost, unless you have Occult Gems, which can only be put in jewelry. Then, you can further boost your durability by using consumables, specifically the Elixir of Fortitude. Once you have your abilities and build set up, you'll be a force of nature in Diablo 4.
