Diablo 4 Season 4: Tempering & Masterworks Guide
Sep-12-2024 PSTDiablo 4's newest Season is available now. Titled Loot Reborn, Season 4 will shake up the way you level up and power up the gear and weaponry you amass in this loot-hoarding action RPG.
Diablo 4 Season 4 introduces two new crafting systems to replace the current one: Tempering and Masterworking. Here's a breakdown of both of them.
Tempering
Tempering in Diablo 4 is a new way to upgrade your gear and customize it as you see fit. Basically, you select a gear you want to Temper, select the Tempering Recipe, and then supply the materials to get the Blacksmith to upgrade it to your liking. You can reroll Tempering Affixes up to 5 times if you are unhappy with the random results.
Tempering requires Tempering Manuals, new Diablo 4 Items that are exclusive to Diablo 4 Season 4. To get these, just kill monsters and open Helltide chests in Helltide areas, as well as help out the Iron Wolves while they're in Helltides. Here is the Tempering Manual tier list:
Magic quality Temper Manuals in World Tier 1 and 2.
Rare quality Temper Manuals in World Tier 3.
Legendary quality Temper Manuals in World Tier 4.
As if that isn't enough, you'll be guaranteed a brand-new Tempering Manual at level 50 via a Priority Quest called "Tempering" at Kyovashad's Blacksmith.
Tempering is divided into six categories:
Weapons: Can only be applied to Weapons.
Offensive: Can be applied to Amulets, Weapons, Rings and Gloves.
Defensive: Can be applied to Amulets, Helmets, Chest armor, and Pants.
Utility: This can be applied to Amulets, Boots, Gloves, Helmets, Chest armor, and Pants.
Mobility: This can be applied to Amulets and Boots.
Resource: Can be applied to Amulets and Rings.
Most cheap Diablo 4 Items can only have a single Tempering Affixes. Ancestral Items can have TWO Tempering Affixes. Speaking of items, here are the Tempering affixes for each item and gear type:
Helms: Defensive and Utility
Chest: Defensive and Utility
Gloves: Offensive and Utility
Pants: Defensive and Utility
Boots: Mobility and Utility
Amulets: Defensive, Utility, Offensive, Mobility and Resource
Rings: Offensive and Resource
Weapons: Offensive and Weapon
Tempering costs at the Blacksmith include:
Iron Chunk/Rawhide,
Veiled Crystals,
Baleful Fragments/Coiling Wards/Abstruse Sigils.
The amount and type are dependent on the Item's Power and equipment. The more powerful the gear, the more materials it needs.
Masterworking
Masterworking is the endgame system available at the Blacksmith that allows you to power up the quality of your affixes, including Tempering Affixes. The reason it's an endgame feature for Season 4 is because the materials required can only be found in the Pit of Artificers which is only accessible when your character is at level 100.
